FAQs

Have questions? If you're new to publishing, you might be wondering how the process works and how we can help. Here are answers to questions you may have about the services we offer for authors.

Q. How do I decide between self-publishing and traditional publishing?
A. There are advantages and disadvantages to each. If you self-publish, you have complete control over your content and will collect a higher royalty share. It's also faster to market. However, you are responsible for upfront costs to prepare your book for publishing and you may not get the exposure that's possible with large publishers. On the other hand, it's difficult to get accepted by a traditional publisher and may take more than a year to see your book in print. Though you might receive an advance with a traditional publisher, your share of royalties is very small.

Q. I'm interested in having you publish my book. Are you a book publisher?
A. We look forward to helping you! While we are not a book publisher ourselves, we will help you publish your book under your own imprint, i.e. we will help you with the upfront preparation needed to self-publish your book.

Q. How are you different from a traditional book publisher?
A. With traditional publishers, you hand over total control of your book. They own your work and make all decisions about editing, cover design, and even the title. They give you a small percentage of royalties earned, usually around 12%. They use their platform to get your book out into the world. In contrast, we help you become your own publisher. You own the rights in all formats and provide final approval of all our services. You can publish your book on platforms like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other retailers. You retain all royalties.

Q. What's the difference between your services and self-publishing?
A. We provide all the help you need to publish your book: editing, proofreading, formatting, and cover design. Once your book is in final form, you can upload the files to the retailers yourself or we can help with that too.

Q. What will my total cost be if I work with you?
A. An average-length (40,000-60,000 words) nonfiction book can range $2,000-$4,000. If there is added complexity (such as a need for significant restructuring or a large number of photos, diagrams, or tables) the cost may be higher.

Q. Can I do some things myself and only hire you for certain services?
A. Absolutely!

Q. Do you take a portion of my royalties?
A. Nope, royalties from your book sales are all yours! You only pay us for the specific services you choose.

Q. Can you help me publish a hardcover book?
A. Definitely! We can publish your book with a hard cover or as a paperback. We also produce ebooks (such as Kindle) and large-print formats.

Q. What's formatting, and do I need it?
A. In order for your book to meet printing standards for online retailers, it needs to be formatted to certain specifications. We take your finished manuscript and prepare it for print and ebook publication on Amazon and other retailers, applying appropriate and consistent formatting and styles to adapt your files for each format. The final files will be professional, polished, and ready to publish! We can provide you with the finished files, or we can upload them directly in your account at major publishing retailers.

Q. Will my book be available at Barnes & Noble bookstores?
A. If you publish to Barnes & Noble's independent publishing platform, your book will be available for ordering from B&N, but may not be on their actual bookshelves until someone requests it. You will be able to search for your book on their online store.

Q. My memoir contains a lot of photos. Can they be included within my book?
A. Absolutely. Photos, sketches, tables, and diagrams can all be included. We can publish your book in color or black and white. Note: ebook versions will always be in color.

Q. How do I know if I'm ready for your services?
A. Your manuscript should be complete and as error-free as you can get it. We take it from there!

Q. Can I see examples of your work?
A. We have helped publish over 100 books in all genres. View our portfolio here.
